Tanzil’s Story
This year we welcomed our fourth and fifth cohorts to the GoodWork Core Programme. This programme provides intensive, in-person careers support at our London Community Hub for young people with no degree or little to no work experience.
Hear from Tanzil, who completed the programme this year, and his mentor Loan.
What was your situation before joining GoodWork?
At the start of the year, I was sleep deprived and had been out of the job market for a while. In short, I was in the dark. I didn’t know where or how I could find my way into the career I wanted. That’s when my local council sent me an email about GoodWork. I thought, “Well, it’s not like I’m working at the moment. I’ll take a crack at it and see what I can learn.”
Tell me about your experience with Loan as your mentor.
Loan has been with me since the very beginning of my journey with GoodWork. She was the volunteer who I worked with during my assessment with GoodWork, helped me to arrange our 1:1s, and helped me get LinkedIn down. She has been a joy to talk to and I couldn’t have asked for a better mentor, teacher and friend.
What’s different in your life now compared to before GoodWork?
I’ve now settled into a professional environment as an apprentice at Amazon. GoodWork gave me the building blocks I needed to get here - from public speaking and organisational skills to maintaining a healthy work-life balance. I’d never worked in a professional setting before and didn’t know the unwritten rules of the workplace or how to take care of my wellbeing at work. GoodWork showed me the right mentality and practical steps needed to succeed. Through events at companies like Expedia, I heard from professionals who shared their knowledge and experiences. Learning these skills and networking with professionals built my confidence – I now feel comfortable presenting in front of employers and know I have what it takes to succeed.
“Without Loan and Team GoodWork, I wouldn’t have been able to secure my new role as an ICT Apprentice at Amazon. Thanks to you all, I can finally start moving again.”
How would you describe the GoodWork community?
GoodWork is an organisation of people who put their heart and soul into getting the best for young people. They’re the flashlight guiding you through the dark, showing you the right steps towards securing employment. The community is full of volunteers, mentors, and staff who equip you with the skills and knowledge you need to succeed. On top of that, the amazing people you meet there makes it a really great community to be part of. They care about your wellbeing and want nothing but the best for you.
Loan’s Perspective
“I had the absolute joy of mentoring Tanzil, a bundle of positivity, energy and tenacity, to support him to kickstart his career in tech. As a mentee, Tanzil was always receptive to feedback, new ideas, new experiences and new ways of working and this thirst for learning shone through our time working together. Before summer 2025, he beat thousands of applicants to be selected for an Amazon Web Services assessment centre and I was so chuffed for him when he successfully secured an ICT apprenticeship with them! Thankful that through the incredible and transformative work GoodWork do in the social mobility space, Tanzil and I were matched and we were able to learn so much from each other during the mentoring programme, whilst having fun on the way! I’m excited to see how Tanzil gets on in the new chapter of his story!”
